Taking a Stand on Judicial Bias
Recently, MoveOn asked its members to sign the petition to support the Democratic senators in standing tall against the wave of right wing, anti-choice Bush judicial nominees. The nominees, while scary in and of themselves, only foreshadow the coming national disaster - nominating a replacement for one of the more liberal or even centrist Supreme Court Justices. We have seen what the conservative Congress seems willing to do on a legislative level with regard to abortion (ie the recent so-called "partial birth" abortion bill). Once the judicial block is removed, the administration and its puppet legislature will have no problem getting rid of reproductive rights in this country. Goodbye sexual revolution, civil rights, environmental progress, racial equality, freedom from religion, and every other form of social progress made in the last few decades. Say hello to Mrs.Cleaver and the stifling retrogression of the 1950's.
My comments attached to the petition:
The Senate has confirmed 168 and blocked a mere 4 judicial nominees. Yet Democrats are once again being accused of tying up the wheels of democracy, of being "partisan," because we will not give in to legislating the right wing platform through the judiciary. A judge who consistently allows his or her moral philosophy to interfere with application of existing law, stare decisis, and the spirit of the Constitution, is not qualified to sit on the bench in the highest courts of our country. Tell the likes of Miguel Estrada and Priscilla Owens to run for elected office but don't try to pass off political candidates as judges.
